Hohenwerfen Fortress is located around forty kilometres south of the city of Salzburg and can be easily reached, either by car or public transport.

Arriving by car or coach

Whatever direction you are coming from, the village of Werfen can be reached via the Tauernautobahn motorway (A 10). Visitors coming from the north take the ‘Pass Lueg’ exit and follow Salzachtal-Bundesstraße (B159) south. After the villages of Sulzau and Tenneck Fortress Hohenwerfen is the next stop. The car park is right next to the main road. Visitors coming from the south leave the motorway at the ‘Pfarrwerfen/Werfen’ exit and keep on in the direction of Werfen. The Hohenwerfen Fortress car park is around two kilometres away.
Please note! A motorway toll sticker (Vignette) is required for all motorways in Austria. Visitors who do not wish to purchase a sticker can reach the Hohenwerfen Fortress via Salzachtal-Bundesstraße (B 159). There is plenty of coach parking available.

Arriving by train

Pfarrwerfen has its own ÖBB and S-Bahn train stops offering direct connections to the city of Salzburg and to Bischofshofen. The S-Bahn trains run every 30 minutes between Salzburg and Pfarrwerfen and the journey lasts just 45 minutes. A shady path leads directly from the train station up to the fortress and the walk takes about half an hour.


Arriving by aeroplane

Salzburg Airport is the closest airport to Hohenwerfen. It is Austria’s second largest airport and lies at the heart of the motorway network interface Salzburg-Munich- Vienna-Villach. There are good scheduled flights to the main European cities and it is well linked up to the main transport hubs of Frankfurt, Vienna, London and Zurich. Coming by taxi or rented car the 47 kilometres to Hohenwerfen can be covered in approximately 30 minutes.

Getting to the top of Hohenwerfen Fortress

Those wishing to climb the 155 metres of altitude on the bright forest path can do so in around 15 minutes. The cash desks are situated in the gateway arches and visitors are advised to wear sturdy shoes for this purpose, for the way up and particularly for the walk down which can be rather slippery. There is also a modern lift that leaves from the car park and travels straight up to the castle.
